"Jeannette Walls' Maturity in The Glass Castle"

Jeannette Walls' Maturity in The Glass Castle

In Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle, we learn quickly that Jeannette is extremely mature. She had a grown-up mentality because her parents did not take good care of their children. She was so intelligent and brave that she accepted all challenges that happened in her life and tried to survive them. Looking at her life from a more positive perspective, because if Jeannette did not try to survive she probably would not have had the same maturity that she had, and his life wouldn't be the same. She would not become the successful woman that she is.

One of the first examples of her early maturity was the first memories that Jeannette Wall’ had when she was three years old. She was standing in front of the stove. She was going to cook a hot dog for herself since she was hungry. And she expressed this “ I could hear Mom in the next room singing while she worked on one of her paintings' '. We learned something really important here: her mother was an artist, and she didn’t care about domestic things. And that is one of the reasons that Jeannette has a mentality so grown up as a child. It is because she needed it to survive. When she commented that she just continued cooking, she did not pay attention to her mother not helping her, she just continued filling up the pot with water, little by little. And little by little Jeannette has to raise herself.

Another example of Jeannette's early maturity was when she was put into the hospital. In this scene, we again read the maturity of Jeanette as a child. She saw the nurses' and doctors' faces and knew that she was a problem. That they were worried and she stayed still. The doctor carefully took off the burning dress and the nurses were holding her hand saying to her that she was going to be okay. Here Jeannette replies "I know," I said, "but if I'm not, that's okay, too." “The nurse squeezed my hand again and bit her lower lip”. Jeannette Walls at such a young age had the maturity to accept difficulties and face what was going to happen with maturity. Reading the book we see that she was not afraid of death since she was mature enough to face whatever happened to her since “if what is not okay, that would be okay too”. She was mature enough to establish a relationship with the doctors and nurses and made new family and friends throughout the hospital stay.

The final example is in the hospital. The Doctor started asking questions to her. If her parents ever hurt her? Does she feel safe with her parents? Those are normal questions that doctors ask if they think that you are not safe in your house with your parents. And she replied to them that her parents never hurt her. She explained what happened and she expressed “ It wasn't like there was some complicated recipe that you had to be old enough to follow”. "Mom says I'm mature for my age," I told them, "and she lets me cook for myself a lot." In those moments the doctor realized how mature and grown Jeannette was at just three years old and how well she explained herself to them, was amazing, so developed for her age.

As has been demonstrated Jeannette Walls’ was extremely mature. From her ability to feed herself to her ability to reconcile death as a three year old. Jeannette faced all the difficulties of his life, which caused his maturity at an early age. She had to raise herself to survive. Also Jeannette establishes a mature relationship with her doctors and nurses who were amazed at the way Jeannette talks with only three years. She did not just amazed her doctor, she also amazed us. With an amazing writing that makes us emerge in her story, and makes us understand that her maturity led her to be the successful woman that she is today.
